Title: Conscious sedation training experience of UK based speciality trainees in special care dentistry: a survey

Author(s): K. Dusara, Y. Lee

Abstract:
Aim
To investigate conscious sedation training experiences of specialty trainees (StRs) in special care dentistry in 2023.

Method
An online survey was conducted using Survey Monkey®. Trainees were recruited via the private StR WhatsApp group of which there were 46 participants in 2023. An email was also sent via the Royal College of Surgeons, England to all trainee programme directors for special care dentistry. A follow up reminder on WhatsApp, was sent a month later.

Results
The survey was completed by 22 trainees out of a potential 46 trainees. By the time this survey was completed 95.45% had completed inhalation sedation training, 86.36% had completed intravenous sedation training and 10.53% had completed transmucosal sedation training.

Conclusions
Due to the limited sample, the results have been interpreted cautiously. Inconsistent training in conscious sedation has been experienced by StRs in special care dentistry. Programme directors responsible for training should ensure all trainees have access to conscious sedation training.
