The most important sedation complication is respiratory depression but of course other medical emergencies can occur during sedation.  IASCD requires sedationists to have training in recognising and managing sedation-related complications.

This webinar will cover management of some medical emergencies and provide an introduction to a new SAAD course providing practical skills to manage sedation complications.

Carole Boyle

Dr Carole Boyle is the SAAD Course Director and previous SAAD President. Carole is a Consultant and Clinical Lead for Special Care Dentistry at Guy’s, and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London. Her particular interests are using sedation for people who require special care, teaching sedation both to undergraduates and postgraduates and providing dental care under general anaesthesia. She is a member of Dental Council at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.


David Craig

David is a consultant in Special Care Dentistry at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and Visiting Professor at the University of Portsmouth. A past president or SAAD and former Course Director, David has over 30 years' experience teaching conscious sedation techniques to undergraduate students, dental and medical practitioners. He has served on dental and multi-disciplinary groups preparing guidelines for safe sedation practice.


Anthony McKay

Anthony has a wealth of experience attending emergencies and teaches undergraduate dental students. He is an ALS, APLS, NLS and Generic Resuscitation Instructor with a keen interest in non-technical skills. He has a Masters in Quality and Safety in Healthcare evaluating resuscitation teams.
