Learning outcomes:

  • To understand the medical and social challenges of the older and obese population, and adapting sedation techniques accordingly
  • To understand the rationale, techniques, risk assessment and challenges associated with domiciliary sedation
  • To explore the pharmacology, indications and contra-indications of new drugs (penthrox and remimazolam)
  • To be aware of latest CQC requirements required for sedation practice
  • To familiarise with ‘The Enjoyable Dentistry Technique’ as an adjunct to inhalation sedation
  • To appreciate the conscious sedation training processes and its challenges

Poster presentations: A first prize of £250 and a second prize of £100 will be awarded for the best poster. Abstracts, of no more than 200 words, and suitable for possible inclusion in the SAAD Digest should be submitted by 10th September 2021 to Poster boards will be allocated by 14th September. You will be responsible for the printing and displaying of your poster, maximum size A0.

SAAD is at the forefront of postgraduate teaching of sedation techniques in dentistry. The Society runs courses for the whole dental team encouraging the safe provision of conscious sedation. Other activities include providing scientific seminars, giving expert advice to other bodies including the Department of Health and the General Dental Council; providing experts for guidelines and standards documents; giving expert evidence to the courts; promoting research in the field of pain and anxiety control and providing individual support and advice to members. Membership of the society is open to any registered dental or medical practitioner, dental nurse or dental therapist/hygienist.
